An Evening with Rose

Thursday, October 11, 2007
7:00 pm
Santa Barbara Rose Society (www.sbrose.org)
Louise Lowry Davis Center
1232 De La Vina St. Santa Barbara

Join noted landscape designer/landscape contractor Lori Ann David as she takes us on an evening's romantic journey with "The Rose" - this avid Master gardener, SB Botanic Garden and Lotusland docent/garden designer is also an accomplished artist in several areas. A few years ago she spoke to us about the use of rose extracts and rose petals, wreath making and drying, floral design and other medicinal and culinary uses. When we asked her again to entertain and inspire us, she shared with me her enthusiasm for a "rosecentric" dinner party and evening that was over the top! Please join us for a lively evening with Lori Ann, and "The Rose".

Lori Ann has also asked us to co-create a portion of this program with her, so if you have any special roses that you would like to cut and contribute for her inclusion, please get them to the Santa Barbara Rose Society in the morning of Tuesday Oct 9, and we will get them to her. Please include with the roses, at least 6-8 open flowers and some buds, cut (6"-as long as you can...) and in water, a small info card on the variety, any interesting info, your name et al.

Empowering Others To Do What You Do
The Art of Directing Staff Talent

Women's Economic Ventures Series (www.wevonline.org)
Date to be posted

In any company or organization, it takes a unique group of people, with a diverse set of skills and experience, to make that “living organism” a success. And the greatest success comes when each individual can not only give and be rewarded for their gifts and talents, but also be encouraged and empowered to do more and grow, and to be able to step in and do aspects of what you do as a CEO, Director, and Mentor – not just “The Boss”. As big as it may sound, teaching others to encompass the big picture while doing what they do is a Win-Win strategy for any entity – large or small.

Lori Ann David has lived her personal and professional life/style as an original “Renaissance Woman”. Her rich and diverse pursuits of the past 30 years always add to her lectures and stories, laced with contagious energy and knowledge- she is an inspirational muse. Trained as a professional athlete, educated as a scientist, living as a farmer/ adventurer/explorer/healer, this teacher has valuable lessons to share. Her company, Landscape ArtDesign is a successful design/build firm of 23 years. Her private retreat center, Sacred Space, is an integrated facility within her sustainable living environment, Casa De Los Angelitos/Aurora Farms. This mother of teens is also an active advocate and coach for Women in Business, and maintains her life-long passion in aviation as a pilot and educator.

Manifesting Sacred Space
Visualizing the Intention and Transforming Passion into Manifestation
Dancing with Color, Shape, Texture, and Form

Lori Ann David is truly recognized as one of today's most sought after, creative and knowledgeable landscape designers/builder. Her horticultural career spans over 20 years beginning with algae farming, moving through a dynamic course of traditional and organic agriculture in all aspects, and rooting the past 14 years in "Ornamental Permaculture with the functional art-edge" as she likes to call it. Her company combines landscape design with the art and style of placement, interactive function, and coupled with the important factors of longevity, budget, and maintenance. She blends this with her love and expertise of sculpted form-Topiary, which she is widely recognized for, as well as unique projects in design/build, floral design and implementation, horticultural consultation, outdoor art and water features.

She will be sharing with us a variety of gardens and sacred spaces through design development, choosing/placing plants, and maintenance through lecture and slides.

Her lifestyle as an original "Renaissance Woman" with her rich and diverse pursuits always adds to her lectures and stories, laced with contagious energy and knowledge. Lori Ann is an inspirational muse to all who have seen her work, or who have chosen to step deeper into their desires, with her as their steward and guide.
Aurora is Lori Ann's spirit name.

Topiary-The Art of Living Sculpture
(history thru the ages, world-wide gardens/examples, current work, how-to…)

Topiary has fascinated and frustrated many a garden and gardener since Egyptian times, yet has survived its form and function through Roman 'topiarius', to be utilized in grand ornamentation by the Byzantine, and permanently put into history with the extensive use in Dutch, French, and English gardens for the past 400 years. As with many things in this new world of America, we have seen the creativity of topiary's full course come into "shape" like nowhere else in the world. Join us for a colorful, informative lecture and slideshow with Lotusland's Topiary garden creator, Lori Ann David. She has lectured extensively on the subject, while also maintaining her own landscape design/construction company for many years.

Creating Outdoor Rooms
(design, considerations, influences, resources, perspective, how-to…)

Eat Your Yard-Ornamental Permaculture with an ArtEdge
(food/beauty combined in an artistic way for fantastic results, how-to..)

The Versatile Rose-Culinary, Herbal and Decorative Magic
(the many uses of roses other than the horticultural care/variety lecture)

Roses are one of the most beautiful and fragrant of all flowers, and one of the most intensive to garden. There is nothing more coveted by a gardener than a huge bouquet of luscious, fragrant blossoms. But what about the rest? We forget that roses have ages of history in medicinal, beauty products, herbal and culinary lore. We will look at those uses, with examples, recipes, and how-to's. Now you will be inspired to pick your bouquet, make a special spread for cake with tea, scent your body, make your salads special, and many other uses you will enjoy.
